Bulletin No. 10

Date/Time sent: 07/20/2020 8:00 am

Aloha mai UH West Oʻahu ʻOhana!

This week’s bulletin theme is “Aʻohe ʻauwaʻa paʻa i ka hālau i ka mālie.” No canoes can be found in the sheds during calm. Everyone in it together!

This past week, July 13-17, found many of us rolling up our sleeves, hands to the soil getting good work done!

  • Our Academic Hale has been busy teaching summer courses, scheduling our fall online and hybrid courses, developing training videos to assist instructors/faculty to prepare for hybrid teaching, and beginning discussions across the divisions and programmatic units regarding our academic prioritization process (among many other tasks).

  • Our Student Services Hale is busy with orientation for first-time and transfer students, reaching out to our unregistered continuing students, and working with students and their families to complete FAFSAs, health forms, and registration forms. Of special note, our Financial Aid office was able to finish awarding all our CARES Student Aid funding to our Spring 2020 students impacted by COVID-19. Kudos!!

  • Our Administrative/Operational Hale continues to prepare our facilities for reopening on a shoe-string (a monumental task), ensuring all our IT equipment and wifi are updated and ready for a dynamic fall semester, and working with the Chancellor’s team on re-opening the campus protocols.

  • Our Chancellor’s Office continues to push out information via our website, bulletins, and listserves. Focus is on efforts to be more efficient while retaining the quality of our programs, identifying revenue generation opportunities, and refining our return to campus protocols.

I am deeply grateful for the difficult work that our operational and administrative staff, our student support staff and faculty, and the leaders of our faculty continue to do. They are all: “Aʻohe ʻauwaʻa paʻa i ka hālau i ka mālie.” In it together! To everyone — your dedication to strengthen our UH West Oʻahu ʻohana by responding creatively and positively to the dramatic challenges of the pandemic with fortitude, resourcefulness, innovation, and concern for our community is much appreciated!

We continue to engage and prepare for broader, more inclusive discussions regarding our academic programs, service to students, and engaged scholarship and outreach/service activities in this time of extreme fiscal stringency. Ultimately, you need to know that my every waking moment is focused on keeping as whole as possible our university community while continuing to deliver excellent, transformative, life-changing (life-saving) education. I am committed to creatively addressing our financial realities with flexibility and compassion while positioning the university for success in the decades to come.

E mālama pono!
