Summer Programs
These Summer Programs are designed to help current and prospective students, such as local high school graduates, prepare, transition, and get an early start on the college experience, as well as give current students the support they need. UH West Oʻahu offers several different programs to choose from depending on academic area of interest or criteria. Some programs are designed around traditional themes, such as effective writing or college algebra, while others may focus on an area of interest of one of our talented faculty members who wishes to inspire the next generation.
He Paepae Aloha
Program dedicated to the preparation of high school students and their ʻohana for their college journey at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu.
This program embraces cultural values as it is a building block of our program. Students who enter this program will earn college and high school credit, access to support services (financial aid, workshops, resume writing, tutoring, etc.) and be exposed to the college going experience.

Program Experiences
Being a He Paepae Aloha student provides you the unique experiences to take part in the following:
ʻŌPIO
The ʻŌpio Progress & Inspirational Opportunities Program (ʻŌPIO) allows Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors from regional high schools to take Early College courses including Math and English as well as Student Development courses to prepare our students for the university experience.
SCCP
Strengthening College to Career Pathways is dedicated to educating the entire ʻohana on the FAFSA and Admissions processes at UH West Oʻahu. While also ensuring they can connect and identify a degree pathway at UH West Oʻahu.
PAN
All program students will have access to He Paepae Aloha’s Peer Assisted Navigators. These Individuals are UH West Oʻahu students who will serve as mentor and tutor to program students.
Program Requirements
He Paepae Aloha haumāna are expected to fully participate in program offerings.
He Paepae Aloha Haumāna Kuleana:
- Attend every and all class meetings
- Be committed and open to all learning
- Communicate effectively with program staff and professors
Eligibility
- A Sophomore, Junior, or Senior from: Pearl City, Waipahu, Campbell, Kapolei, Nānākuli, and Waiʻanae High Schools.
- Minimum of 2.4 GPA
- Preference given to those of Native Hawaiian ancestry.
Application Process
- Complete an inquiry form.
- Schedule one-on-one meeting with Program Coordinator.
- Complete Early College application.
- Submit transcripts to UH West Oʻahu.
Heading Westbound
Heading Westbound is a Summer experience that is dedicated to providing an enriched experience to incoming freshmen students attending University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu. It aims to improve student success through engagement with campus community and resources, increasing participantsʻ sense of belonging to UH West Oʻahu, and improve program participants retention rate through their first year of college.
This eight week long Summer Experience allows students to participate in engagement and enrichment activities at the university. Students will be immersed in workshops that build pilina, belonging, and community with themselves and others. As we respect the cultural richness each of the students bring with them, we will honor that aspect by holding workshops that teach them to leverage their prior knowledge in preparation for their higher education journey. Furthermore, as students share these experiences we will integrate college preparedness courses that will further develop those knowledge wells and create connections that will contribute to their overall success as a student at UH West Oʻahu.
Heading Westbound: Summer Experience is an integral part of the Universityʻs vision in providing a premier learning environment for our 21st century students.
Ho‘opūliko Kumu Hou
Ho’opuliko Kumu Hou targets to empower and strengthen the number of teachers who are rooted in their communities and committed to their kuleana to Hawaiʻi students. Hoʻopūliko Kumu Hou provides teacher candidates the opportunity to focus on increasing Hawaiian cultural knowledge, values, practices, and principles in their classroom as a way to reach all students.
Program Experiences
- Our program builds a thriving teacher preparation program that privileges belonging, aloha, excellence, responsibility, wellbeing, and Hawaiʻi (HĀ).
- Supporting student participants through an ʻohana of support for secondary education student candidates.
- Rooted in Hawaiian Culture Based Education.
- Utilize ʻike kupuna (generational wisdom) as a tool to participants with the manaʻo (thought) that they too will share this ʻike to engage, mālama, and aloha their future haumana (students)!

Kahikū: Rise to Excellence
Program Dates: July 1 – August 9
Kahikū is the period of time between red dawn and noon when the sun is ascending to its highest point. Our program name reflects the concept of motivating students to reach their highest potential. our program aims to illuminate the path for first-year students as they embark on the journey into post- secondary education.
Students who participate in Kahikū: Rise to Excellence College Access and Preparation program have the opportunity to build connections, explore a variety of career pathways, and gain insight into campus life. We believe that by providing students with holistic support, we can empower students to make informed decisions about their future. Our program is dedicated to the unique growth and success of each student.

- Priority will be given to seniors from the following high schools: W.R. Farrington, Kaimukī, William McKinley, Waiʻanae, Nānākuli and Kamaile Academy PCS
- Submit an Admissions application to UH West O‘ahu
- Complete the Kahikū Summer application before June 1, 2024

Ke Ala Kiakahi
Program Dates: June 13 – 27 (Partnered with Kamehameha Schools)
Ke Ala Kiakahi – Pathways to College Success is a program for students interested in exploring the idea of post-secondary education while staying rooted in their community. This program empowers students to embrace their indigenous identities and provides participants with holistic support. The Ke Ala Kiakahi program aims to increase college and career readiness for high school seniors from the Waiʻanae Coast. Our dedication to our students will serve to expose them to various college degrees here at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu.
Eligibility & Application Process
- Resident of Waiʻanae, Hawaiʻi
- Come from Native Hawaiian Ancestry
- Be in good academic standing with a high school GPA of 3.0 or better
- Graduating HS seniors from Waiʻanae, Nānākuli &/or Kamaile Academy
- Attend the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu for their freshmen year and be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits), although full-time is highly encouraged

Nā Pua Noʻeau
Nā Pua No‘eau Program for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children provides an array of educational opportunities for Hawaiian students. The Center nurtures the gifts and talents of all of the children they serve, provides educational and cultural experiences that raises the students’ achievements and aspirations, and promotes supporting activities that enhances the potential of reaching their educational and career goals.
Nā Pua – In reference to the children of Hawaiʻi, is the Hawaiian word for “lower.” Noʻeau – Clever or smart. Continuation in nurturing the gifts and talents of keiki Hawaiʻi. Fostering future leaders and stewards of service throughout their communities.
Heluhelu & Holoholo
Nā Pua Noʻeau fosters and nurtures every individualʻs own gift. In pursuit of this, one of our missions is to increase literacy and improve reading strategies for at-risk populations of Native Hawaiian children in grades PreK-3 and their family members. Reading workshops reach out to both keiki and ʻohana with a focus on moʻolelo Hawaiʻi for Keiki Hawaiʻi and Kaʻao to strengthen literacy, engagement, and personal gifts.
STEM
Nā Pua Noʻeau also adheres to the high demand for 21st century learners and leaders. Our STEM/STEAM Workshops are rooted in Hawaiian practice, all while nurturing and unlocking skill sets for our Keiki Hawaiʻi to reach their full potentials.
Hāinu Lāʻau
Our most recent STEM workshop that integrates Hawaiian medicinal practices utilizing natural herbs gathered from the mālā, UH West Oʻahu garden.
College Bound Activities
Nā Pua Noʻeau also provides workshops presented by a guest speaker/co-teacher of curriculum revolving around Identity, place, and culture as well as specifics intertwining Native Hawaiian principles into higher education. We examined personal strengths, what students look for in a college, and what a college education means to the student.
Papahana Wailau Ola
Papahana Wailau Ola is an online support program for transfer students entering the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu. This program is unique as it embraces ʻōlelo, nohona, and ʻike Hawaiʻi to foster a holistic approach that is inclusive of Native Hawaiian values and principles. These students will have the opportunity to attend culturally relevant workshops, mentoring, tutoring, and academic support services solely online in addition to their regular degree program.
The Papahana Wailau Ola is committed to building upon cohort students’ understanding and connection to Hawaiian culture in navigating their educational journey here at the University.
