Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Dr. Harald Barkhoff
As the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Harald Barkhoff is the campus’ chief academic officer and is responsible for academic planning and curriculum development for the campus. He manages faculty and instructional activities as well as the operation of the library and resource center, course scheduling, new academic program growth and priorities, partnerships with other campuses and the business community, and non-credit program development that enhances the educational breadth, depth, and vibrancy of the campus.
Vice Chancellor Barkhoff, who joined UH West Oʻahu in August 2023, earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sport Science/Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology from the University of Stuttgart where he also was a faculty in the Sport Sciences Department before joining the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. At UH Hilo, he served as faculty in the Department of Kinesiology & Exercise Sciences, where he advanced to a tenured full professor and served as their Department Chair. Many of his studies focused on elite athletes and peak performance, however he is also interested in cultural components of health behaviors, including physical activity in indigenous, Native Hawaiian environments. Under his leadership as chair the department received the National Inclusive Excellence Award from the American Kinesiology Association (AKA). 2019, Vice Chancellor Barkhoff received the highest honor given by the AKA – the Jerry R. Thomas Distinguished Leadership Award for Bachelors Degree Granting Departments. The award recognizes nationally outstanding administrative and leadership performance. He also won the Applied Learning Experiences Excellence in Teaching Award as well as the Open Education Innovation Award at UH Hilo.
In 2021, Vice Chancellor Barkhoff joined the California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) as the Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services (CHSHS). He worked closely with faculty and staff to increase external and grant funding for CHSHS programs; initiated the College’s first Social Justice Award for Students and Faculty/Staff, the first College Colloquium that included all the programs within the college; focused on enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion within the college and across campus; and has been instrumental in working with his team to grow key programs. He also served as Interim Dean for the College of Education at CSUMB. Haraldʻs service to his profession and community includes the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the AKA as well as serving on the Hawaiʻi State Charter School Commission.
