The theme for this week is: E wehe i ka umauma i ākea! Open wide the chest, be generous and kind to all.

As we prepare for our fall 2020 semester in the midst of increasing pandemic numbers, it is essential that we work collectively to be responsible for generating a culture of safety, wellness, inclusivity, respect, and accountability on our campus.

Please be aware:

  • Mask-up – Facial coverings are required on the UH West Oʻahu Campus. Please “mask-up”! Employees, students and visitors whose circumstances require an alternative face covering, as indicated by a medical condition should request an alternative.

Should someone not be wearing a facial covering, a simple reminder should be enough. Remember to be gracious/kind with an approach that is focused on “education and deescalation”. Sample comments:

  • “I understand wearing a face covering is an inconvenience, but it is required in classrooms and public spaces where we canʻt maintain 6-feet of physical distance from others for 15 minutes or more. I know you may find this inconvenient or objectionable, but under the circumstances we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience. This is not simply a matter of personal choice; a face covering protects others.”

  • “Although you may disagree with this or question the face coveringʻs effectiveness, weʻre choosing to err on the side of safety at UH West Oʻahu. We believe this simple act of safety and courtesy is one that we can all undertake together.”

  • You could ask a question:

    • “Are you aware that you can attend classes remotely/work remotely if you are unable to wear a face covering?”

    • “I would feel more comfortable while we are talking if you would wear a face covering; did you bring one with you?”

If you have tested positive, are symptomatic, or were in contact with a positive case, IMMEDIATELY contact the UH West Oʻahu COVID-19 Hotline at (808) 689-2525 or covidwo@hawaii.edu.
