Math and English Course Placement

All assessments are valid for (2) years. Initial assessments are free while re-tests will incur a $25 re-test fee. For advising on placement scores, please contact a college success advisor at (808) 689-2689 or uhwo.advising@hawaii.edu.

Math Course Placement

UH West Oʻahu Math course placement is determined with an ACT, SAT, AP, or Smarter Balanced score. If you do not have a valid placement score, you may enroll in Math 100, Math 103M and Math 103L (5 credits total), or Math 115M and Math 115L (5 credits total). If you need placement into any other Math course, you will need to complete an Accuplacer assessment and earn the qualifying cut scores listed in the table below:

English Course Placement​

UH West Oʻahu English course placement is determined with an ACT, SAT, or AP score. If you do not have a valid placement score, you may enroll in ENG 100T (5 credits total). If you need placement into ENG 100, you will need to complete an Accuplacer assessment or UHWO Authentic Assessment and earn the qualifying cut scores listed in the table below:

English Authentic Assessment

The Math Accuplacer is an untimed assessment. However, the average completion time for the assessment is approximately 40 minutes.

The Math Accuplacer is available anytime during our operating hours, which are located at the bottom of each page on our website.

Math Accuplacer scores are determined on the day the assessment is taken.

Appointments are required to take the Accuplacer and can be made here.

The English Accuplacer is an untimed assessment. However, the average completion time for the assessment is approximately 60 minutes.

English Accuplacer assessments are available anytime during our operating hours, which are located at the bottom of each page on our website.

English Accuplacer placement scores are determined on the day the assessment is taken. 

Authentic assessment scores are graded and scores are received within 1-2 weeks of submission

Appointments are required to take the Accuplacer and can be made here.

Placement is determined by either examination. You do not need to take both placement exams, you can choose which exam to take.
