Swedish newspapers were hit with a DDoS attack. The newspapers affected were Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen, Aftonbladet, Dagens Industri, Sydvenskan, and Helsingborgs Dagblad. The websites went down on March 19th from about 19:00 GMT till about 22:00 GMT. There are few details on the actual attack, but head of the Swedish Media Publishers’ Association, Jeanette Gustafsdotter, confirmed the event in an interview with Swedish news agency TT. Gustafsdotter stated, “To threaten access to news coverage is a threat to democracy.” No group or individual has taken responsibility for the DDoS attack, but a twitter account posted statements about it saying, ” The Following Days attacks against the Swedish government and media spreading false propoganda will be targetted.” Another tweet from the same user, @_notJ, stated, “This is what happends when you spread false propoganda. Aftonbladet.se #offline @Aftonbladet.” Swedish Police and Intelligence are investigating the case. There are outside comments saying the attack originated from Russian ISPs.
