  • How To Apply:
    • Eligibility

      • Participant must be currently enrolled in programs leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree (Full-time or part-time)
      • Participant must be U.S citizen, U.S nationals, or permanent residents of the United States
      • Participant must complete a minimum 15 credit hours above the 100 level courses in computer science or cyber-security
      • An exceptional student who has less than 15 credit hours but has proof to demonstrate knowledge in computer science or cyber-security will also be considered

  • Summary:
    • Support from the NSF (Award 1852145) establishes a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site in Internet of Things (IoT) security at Dakota State University (DSU) in Madison, South Dakota. The REU site will host 10 students on DSU’s campus to participate in a 10-week summer program each year of the project. Our summer program is unique in the way it provides the frontline cybersecurity research experiences in IoT, professional development, close student interactions, and follow-up activities to our student participants to build their knowledge and confidence for work in the cybersecurity field. The target student population of the proposed program is women students and students from the institutions with limited cybersecurity research opportunities. The students will work closely with faculty mentors to conduct IoT security research projects. The project will prepare and create a highly skilled and diverse group of students with research experiences in cybersecurity.

Overview

The Cyber Scholarship Program (CySP) is designed to recruit the nation’s top cyber talent to the DoD as well as retain our current cyber workforce to help secure our nation against the threats of information systems and networks. CySP scholarship applications are submitted through National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (CAE-C) institutions.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

 

Full-time students currently enrolled in a program leading to an associates, undergraduate, or graduate degree, and pursuing a course of study and/or have a declared major in one of the scientific, technical or managerial disciplines related to computer and network security, with a concentration in a cybersecurity function at a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Education (CAE) institution.

Successfully complete a background investigation to determine suitability for federal employment.

Accept a federal appointment with a DoD agency civilian employee as a GS-7, GS-9, or GS-11, based on your qualifications. The duration of obligation for the scholarship is one calendar year for each academic year, or partial year, for which financial assistance (scholarship) is received. The employment may involve travel or changes in duty stations, assignments in different organizations, functional areas, and geographic areas during your obligation period.

      • The NIWC teams will be coordinating with the UH faculty and other partners, to include the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) and U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and industry partners to identify the knowledge and skills needed for the workforce of tomorrow. The partners will then develop a list of research, engineering, information technology, network, and/or business initiatives for the summer program. Students will work with the UH faculty and Navy partners to perform either individual or team-based research on one of the research topics identified.
