UHWO Wins NCAE Cyber Games Regional Championship, 12th at the National Invitational

By Michael Miranda on April 17, 2025

Over 140 teams competed nationally.  UHWO defeated 12 collegiate teams to win the Southwest Region 2 on March 16, 2025.  With that win, they earned the University of Hawaii’s first-ever invitation to the National Competition in April 2025, where they placed 12th.  NCAE Cyber Games combines capture the flag (CTF) and red versus blue infrastructure competition.  Competitors work with teammates to defend their computer networks from the NCAE Cyber Games professional red team hackers. While the red team is the opposition on competition day, competitors compete for the top score against other teams. To beat the competition, the teams must act as a unified force to keep the red team out of their systems and score points in the CTF.

Being the University of Hawaii’s first-ever appearance, the students proudly represented UHWO and met new friends and future cybersecurity professional colleagues.  The lessons they learned will be leveraged to strengthen their professional development, shared with the students and faculty, and applied to continue to improve UHWO’s cybersecurity programs.

The UHWO team was comprised of the following students:

  • Kiana Merez (Captain)
  • Kendall Wong
  • Shane Zuls
  • Ryan Vagay
  • Nyla Boneza
  • Joel Kawamae
  • Chloe Kurashima
  • Blix Hazen
The team was mentored by Anthony Eich, UHWO Lecturer and Alumnus.  Dr. Eli Tsukayama, UHWO Associate Professor, supported the team in Tampa, Florida, during the National Invitational competition.
