Clean air is fundamental to our health and to the wellbeing of our natural environment. The presence of contaminants in the air can significantly affect our welfare. In fact, prolonged exposure to air pollution increases a person’s chances of developing health problems such as respiratory illnesses and heart disease. Contaminants in the air also have a detrimental effect on natural resources, including water and soil, as well as on plant and animal life.

In an effort to raise public awareness and promote solutions that improve air quality around the world, the first International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is celebrated on September 7, 2020. This observance was decided by the United Nations General Assembly held in January this year.
