OER Training
The UHWO OER Committee regularly hosts an “Introduction to OER” workshop for interested faculty and lecturers. Since it is a general introduction to the subject, no prior knowledge about OER is expected. To successfully complete the workshop, participants will need to:
- fully attend the workshop
- peer-review an OER material
OER Awards
The UHWO OER Committee awards OER advocates annually, if funding is available. There are generally 3 awards that UHWO faculty and lecturers are eligible for. Each of those awards is described below.

UHWO Open Educator Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty who promote or contribute to a culture of utilizing Open Educational Resources (OER) in the classroom.
Applicants are evaluated on the originality of OER, evidence of teaching and learning innovation, and the economic impact on students. Self-nominations are accepted.
Eligibility: Any faculty or lecturer teaching a Textbook Cost: $0 course at UHWO for at least one semester (Fall or Spring). Any faculty or lecturer who previously applied may re-apply provided s/he has not been chosen as a recipient of this award within the last 5 years.

UHWO OER Creation Award
The purpose of the OER Creation Award is to support faculty in the creation and development of OER textbooks, videos, and other educational materials which are designed to replace traditional commercial textbooks.
Goal: For faculty or lecturers to develop original OER materials where none exists or revise and remix existing OER with the addition of original content.
Eligibility: Any full-time faculty member or lecturer teaching a credit-based course (3 credits or more) at UHWO. Any faculty or lecturer who previously applied may re-apply provided s/he has not been chosen as a recipient of this award within the last 3 years. The deliverable must have been created during the current school year. Faculty who intend to be nominated for this award should consult the UHWO OER Creation Award Rubric that is used by the committee to rate applications.

UHWO Designing OER Renewable Assignment
The purpose of this award, hereby known as the UHWO-DORA, is to support the creation of renewable assignments. Applicants are encouraged to consult with the Office of Distance Learning (uhwode@hawaii.edu) to assist you with the process and direct you to relevant resources.
Goal: The creation of renewable assignments based on the principles of OER-Enabled Pedagogy which are designed to be used with specific open educational resources (OER).
Eligibility: Any faculty or lecturer teaching a Textbook Cost: $0 course at UHWO for at least one semester (Fall or Spring), either alone or in partnership with an Educational Technologist/Instructional Designer. Any faculty or lecturer who previously applied may re-apply provided s/he has not been chosen as a recipient of this award within the last 3 years. The deliverable must have been created during the current school year. Faculty who intend to be nominated for this award should consult the UHWO Renewable Assignment Rubric that is used by the committee to rate applications.
