Did you know Hawai‘i’s state archive for videos and films is located on campus? Stop by the ‘Ulu‘ulu Archive table in the Courtyard to learn about historic footage in the archive’s collections and how to access these videos for class projects and other research.

Bring your personal film and videotape collections to the table in the Courtyard where ‘Ulu‘ulu Archive staff will be on-hand offering tips for caring for your films and videotapes, and providing advice about digitization.

E hele mai! Join us for ʻŌlelo Maʻamau and Hoʻokani Honouliuli. Spend an hour learning Hawaiian phrases, common sayings and building a solid Hawaiian vocabulary word bank. Bring your instruments, song books and voices, and spend the hour sharing Hawaiian music and songs in an informal jam session. No instruments or song books? Mai hopohopo (no worry). You may borrow instruments on-site!

ʻOnipaʻa: Turning Points, 9:30-10:45 a.m., UHWO Library ‘Ulu‘ulu Exhibition Space
Come learn about two important turning points in Hawai‘i history – the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i (Jan. 17, 1893) and the commemoration march and events held at ‘Iolani Palace on the 100th anniversary of the overthrow in 1993. UHWO faculty members Dr. Leilani Basham, Dr. Masahide Kato, and Dr. Kealani Cook will present research on both events and share how each has impacted the people of Hawai’i. ‘Ulu‘ulu Archive will also show historic footage of the 1993 march.

Enjoy the serenading sounds of fellow UHWO students sharing their talents. Featuring South African musician and music therapist Sharon Katz from noon-1 p.m.

Film screening: “When Voices Meet”, 3:30-6:20 p.m., UHWO Library ‘Ulu‘ulu Exhibition Space
“When Voices Meet” chronicles the work of Katz and singer and educator Nonhlanhla Wanda in forming a 500-voice multiracial choir to break through Apartheid’s barriers following Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990. Traveling aboard “The Peace Train” while being threatened with bombs, the choir prevailed and acted as ambassadors of peace during a tumultuous time in South African history.

Saturday, Jan. 16

UHWO Student Organic Garden Work Party, 8-11 a.m., UHWO Student Organic Garden (mala)
Volunteer to help prepare soil, build compost, plant fruit trees, install irrigation, sow seed, weed and harvest along with fellow students, faculty and staff at the UHWO Student Organic Garden Work Party. The garden is located between the Classroom and Laboratory Buildings (D and E). Please dress appropriately (closed-toed shoes required) and bring water and snacks to share with other volunteers if possible. For more information, contact Dr. Albie Miles at albie@hawaii.edu.
