Optimize Zoom recordings for video editing

A tiny action figure looks up at a blurred female face that fills a computer monitor.

Perhaps you’ve invited a special guest speaker to your online class. For a presentation you plan on editing for future viewing, start by checking your Zoom settings before recording. Open the Zoom desktop app, click the settings gear and make the following selections to ensure a quality recording:

  • General settings > Zoom Updates > Check that your desktop client is up to date.
  • Video settings > Camera > Select HD.
  • Video settings > My Video > Avoid heavy use of touch up my appearance.
  • Audio settings > Audio Profile > Check Personalized audio isolation if using a headset with microphone. Otherwise, select Room background noise removal.
  • Audio settings > Microphone > Use the webcam microphone or an external mic rather than the built-in computer microphone for crisp audio.
  • Recording > Local Recording > Check Optimize for 3rd party video editor and Record video during screen sharing.

Click the Advanced button and sign in to review meeting options.

  • Under Meeting Settings > Select Mute all participants when they join a meeting and toggle off Sound notification when someone joins or leaves.

Set your video camera options once you start the meeting:

  • Start Video > Blur My Background (if needed). This is a better choice than virtual backgrounds, which may appear imperfectly without use of a green screen.
