From Digital Native to Digital Competency

Digital skills and fluency are essential to a student’s academic achievement and future workplace success. Colleges and universities are advised to take a community-based approach to addressing the tech gaps of students by enlisting the expertise of IT professionals, librarians, academic advisors, tutors, and others.

A recent webinar, From Digital Native to Digital Competency, hosted by The Chronicle of Higher Education, is now available for on-demand viewing. Webinar panelists examine the validity of the term ‘digital native’ and argue that assumptions of digital competencies can dismiss socioeconomic differences that can result in uneven student preparedness to engage in online research and various forms of platform-based writing. In addition to this lively panel discussion, the Chronicle plans to release a companion report on college student tech readiness.
