Engage online students with PIP recordings

A recent literature review of visual instructor presence in lecture videos found no evidence that the addition of picture-in-picture (PIP) increases extraneous cognitive load. In fact, Oregon State University researchers discovered students prefer lectures with the instructor visible. Online students reported increased satisfaction, motivation, and engagement when viewing PIP recordings.

Zoom provides a simple approach to recording PIP videos. To record a lecture in this mode, start a new meeting and click Share my screen. Go to Advanced settings and choose PowerPoint as a virtual background. Open a PowerPoint presentation and enable your webcam. Be sure to change your view option to Hide Self View, so you don’t appear outside of your slide presentation. Note the PIP image can be moved and adjusted while recording to accommodate changing slide content.
