Add Hawaiian language keyboard

Hawaiian Language Keyboard

In February, the University of Hawaiʻi commemorated the native language of Hawaiʻi. UH established Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi to encourage the preservation and use of the Hawaiian language. Join this effort by adding the Hawaiian language keyboard to your computer. Why?

The Hawaiian language has two diacritical marks: the ʻokina (glottal stop) and vowels with kahakō (macron). These marks create special characters that provide information on word meaning and pronunciation. Mac and PC users can install the Hawaiian language keyboard by following the steps outlined by UH ITS in Hawaiian Diacritics

Once the keyboard is installed and selected, you can readily add meaningful diacritical marks to your writing.

On macOS

  • To input the ʻokina, use the single quote key (‘) thatʻs on the right of the keyboard, next to the return key
  • To input the kahakō (line above a vowel), hold down the option key (on either side of the keyboard) and press the desired vowel key.

On a PC

  • To input the ʻokina, press the apostrophe key (to the right of the semicolon key).
  • To input the kahakō (line above a vowel), hold down the Alt key on the right side of your keyboard and press the desired vowel key.
