‘One Job Should Be Enough’ teach-in event scheduled for Tuesday

Striking UNITE HERE workers protest in San Francisco

The “One Job Should Be Enough” campaign will be discussed by representatives from UNITE HERE! Local 5 during a teach-in on the UH West Oʻahu campus next week.

Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend the teach-in, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23 at noon in the courtyard. UNITE HERE! Local 5 was invited to conduct the teach-in by the Center for Labor Education and Research on the UH West Oʻahu campus as well as other University of Hawaiʻi faculty.

One Job Should Be Enough is the UNITE HERE’s theme for the hotel worker strike on Oʻahu and Maui and in several Mainland cities by the union. The labor organization contends too many workers are being offered part-time work with few or no benefits as employers abandon full-time positions, among other issues.

The hotel worker strike is being conducted against hotel operator Marriott International in Hawaiʻi, Detroit, Boston, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose. The union says that Marriott’s profits have risen dramatically while workers’ annual income has had a single-digit percent increase and that workers have experienced lower hours. Striking workers have organized events with a message that one job should be enough to raise a family, pay bills, and retire with dignity.
