UH West Oʻahu’s Dr. Esther Widiasih will delve into the issue of Climate Change in a Math + Science + X seminar this Friday, Feb. 2.

Widiasih, an assistant professor of mathematics, will present a way to understand the earth’s climate using graphs from a simple model. The discussion may lead to future projections of what areas will be habitable for humans, best for crops, polar bears, and corals.

Widiasih’s research interests include the application of dynamical systems, or the study of how a system evolves over time. She has studied El Nino and Southern Oscillations (ENSO), glacial cycles, snowball earth, and bee population through the lens of dynamical systems.

Widiasih previously gave a talk titled “Climate Change: A complex reality viewed from a simple Math lens,” during the Math-for-Industry 2017 forum that was held at the East-West Center in October 2017. She discussed the use of the Budyko zonal energy balance model of the climate and to understand climate change using mathematics.

Her talk is titled “Is Climate Changing? Show Me the Numbers!” and is scheduled from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in E133.
