UH West Oʻahu Director of Institutional Research, John Stanley, contributed a chapter to a newly published book, Institutional Research Initiatives in Higher Education, which provides insight into contemporary challenges, innovative programs, and best practices in institutional research.
“Like the departments it studies, Institutional Research Initiatives in Higher Education is an invaluable resource for university administrators, researchers, and policymakers alike,” according to Routledge, leading academic publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences that was founded in 1836. During its history, Routledge has published works by Albert Einstein, Carl Jung, F.A. Hayek, and Jean-Paul Sartre.
Institutional Research Initiatives in Higher Education features a mix of contributors drawn from community colleges, traditional undergraduate institutions, land grant institutions, research and flagship universities, and state agencies.
Stanley co-authored a chapter in the 330-page book with Serge Herzog, University of Nevada – Reno director, institutional analysis, titled “Researching the Different Effects of Tuition Policies that Impact Enrollment”. Stanley and Herzog analyzed the effects of interstate tuition reciprocity agreements, namely the Western Undergraduate Exchange, on students’ individual decisions to enroll at public land-grant universities.
Institutional research offices are increasingly involved in understanding the implications of and institutional responses to public policy, especially new state funding models. Stanley’s and Herzog’s chapter is dedicated to examining the relationship between college costs and students’ postsecondary education decisions.
