New online class this Spring: World History through Music

Electronic Flyer describing new course

A new class at UH West Oʻahu for Spring 2018 will use music as a jumping-off point to examine topics such as cross-cultural encounters, diasporas, resistance and globalization and how Music from around the world has been influenced by and has impacted these global processes.

HIST 398B: World History through Music will cover topics such as South African music used to protest Apartheid; music published by Hawaiian diasporic communities; music performed at European and Islamic royal courts; and influences of African religion, music and dance on music in the Caribbean and South America. ‘’

By focusing on music, students will be able to think about what these events meant for the people who listened to and performed the music, according to Dr. Drew Gonrowski, a UH West Oʻahu lecturer offering the class.

The writing-intensive online course will also discuss specific songs and artists such as “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar.  and “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)” by K’naan, Riz Ahmed, Snow Tha Product, and Residente.
