UH West Oʻahu Instructor of Economics Peiyong “Patricia” Yu participated as a judge in the Hawaiʻi Council on Economic Education 2017 Economics “Through the Eyes of Children” calendar contest on May 13. Participating Hawaiʻi students learned six economic concepts in their classrooms and then illustrated posters of their favorite concepts. The winning designs will be included in the Hawaiʻi Council on Economic Education “Through the Eyes of Children” 2017 calendar.
“I believe firmly in the Hawaiʻi Council on Economic Education’s mission since even as adults, we sometimes find it hard to keep our budget balanced,” said Yu. “It is crucial to educate kids about important concepts like scarcity, including the scarcity of our time, and even scarcity of balance, specialization, and how to be rational consumers and efficient producers. Economic and financial literacy skills are essential in preparing students to be better decision-makers in their everyday lives.”
Dr. Peiyong “Patricia” Yu has a PhD in economics from Northern Illinois University. Her research focuses on regional economics, environmental economics, and urban economics.
