The University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu joined UH System campuses at the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) Summer Institute Leadership in August to receive an award for cross-campus collaboration.
As part of the development of a SENCER community in Hawaiʻi, UH campuses (UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, UH West Oʻahu, Windward Community College, and Kapiʻolani Community College) earned the award for multi-institutional, regional, or statewide work around compelling civic issues.
SENCER, an initiative of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement (NCSCE) for excellence in teaching undergraduate science through community engagement, has established and supported an ever-growing community of faculty, students, academic leaders, and others to improve undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.
Dr. Michael Hayes, associate professor in the division of education and coordinator of community engagement and service learning, Dr. Albie Miles, assistant professor of sustainable community food systems, Dr. Esther Widiash, assistant professor of mathematics, and Sherry Proper, director of strategic initiatives, represented UH West Oʻahu.
UH West Oʻahu will work to create NCSCE-related initiatives and collaborate across the UH System to make innovative changes to the teaching of science and math.
