Are you a Student Leader? You might want to apply for these student awards

Spring 2018 Pueo Award winners

Students have until Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, to apply for leadership awards that will be given during the Fall 2018 Pueo Awards Ceremony and Reception in late November. This includes:

Student Service and Leadership Distinction Award

The Student Service and Leadership Distinction Award recognizes students who have served the needs of fellow students during their college career and have outstanding leadership skills. The award winner must also have made a significant contribution by planning a program or activity, advocating on student concerns or issues and help make the campus culture a positive experience for students. They also are to be cited for going beyond what other students are contributing to the campus.

The Fall 2018 Student Service and Leadership Distinction Award is given in two categories — the campus-wide contribution category or the program/co-curricular specific category. A requirement for both awards is being a classified UH West Oʻahu student who is graduating during the Fall 2018 semester.

Specific requirements for the campus-wide contribution category include serving at least two semesters in a student leadership capacity, and having served in more than one student organization or co-curricular program.

Requirements for the program/co-curricular specific category includes having served at least two semesters in a student leadership capacity in a Chartered Student Organization (CSO), or a Registered Independent Student Organization (RISO).

Emerging Leadership Award

The Emerging Leadership Award recognizes students with many of the same characteristics as those receiving the Student Services and Leadership Distinction Award, but the award has slightly different application criteria. Applicants must not be graduating in Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 and must be classified as a student with sophomore- or junior-level credit standings.

Other requirements for the award include having served at least two semesters in a student leadership capacity in a Chartered Student Organization, or Registered Independent Student Organization. Past recipients of the award cannot apply again.

The applications for the Student Service and Leadership Distinction Award and Emerging Leadership awards are available from the Office of Student Life in C215 or online.

Other Awards for Graduating Seniors

In addition, the awards ceremony will recognize graduating seniors (graduating in December) who are student-leaders of a RISO or chartered student organization. Eligible college seniors must have served in a leadership capacity of a student organization (RISO or CSO) for at least two semesters and are graduating in December.

Meet the criteria? Send an email with your name, the name of the organization, and the number of years of service to Rouel Velasco, Coordinator for Student Leadership Development Programs, rouel@hawaii.edu by Friday, Nov. 9, at 11:59 p.m. You can also hand-in applications by 4:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9, in the Office of Student Life (C215) within the Campus Center Student Lounge.

Award recipients will be recognized at the Pueo Awards Ceremony and Reception Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Campus Center Multipurpose Room (C208). Questions may be directed to Velasco at (808) 689-2942 or by email to rouel@hawaii.edu.
