To my UH West Oʻahu ʻohana,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my decision to retire at the end of this calendar year. I am retiring to begin a new journey, spend time with people that I love, go fishing, and work out.

Together, we made great strides for our campus, including:

  • Reaffirmation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for seven years, through 2022, upon the strengths of our student-centered environment and creation of an organizational commitment to quality assurance by formalizing planning processes across constituencies.
  • Increasing student life opportunities, including an expanded intramurals program.
  • Developing processes designed to formalize our institutional processes, specifically our Strategic Plan, Na Kākou E Hoʻomālamalama, and our Comprehensive Communications Plan.
  • Receiving $14.2 million in Title III grants from the U.S. Department of Education for Native Hawaiian health and wellness facilities and student support services.

Mahalo nui for your hard work and contributions toward making this campus special for our students, faculty, staff, and community.

I am looking forward to serving this final semester with you, and hope that we can continue the progress that we have made collectively these past few years. While it is my hope that I get the chance to say goodbye to each of you individually, please know that I am grateful to have served with and for you.

Me ʻOe Kuʻu Mahalo,

Rockne C. Freitas
