UH West Oʻahu Assistant Professor of Anthropology William Belcher published a peer-reviewed journal article in the Journal of the North Atlantic in a special edition on North American East Coast Shell Midden Research.
Co-published by David Sanger (Professor Emeritus, University of Maine), “The Roque Island Archaeological Project, Maine, USA: Methodologies and Results” details the development of a specific strategy of excavation related to shell middens – a type of archaeological site composed of various types of shell fish that are often very difficult to excavate. The article discusses the excavation and summarizes the archaeological history of a Ceramic Period site in the Downeast Region of Maine, the Great Spruce Island site, which was occupied from 2150 to 400 years ago.
