In preparation for the upcoming fall 2016 semester, faculty and staff gathered for Professional Development Day/Convocation on August 17 to reconnect after the summer break, hear campus updates, and learn about campus-wide student success initiatives.
Interim Chancellor Doris Ching recognized UH West Oahu’s new employees, service awardees, promotion and tenure recipients, faculty award winners, and retirees. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Jeffrey Moniz, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Judy Oliveira, and Vice Chancellor for Administration, Kevin Ishida, provided updates from their respective departments. Faculty and staff were informed about student success initiatives such as Achieve the Dream, E Ala Pono (Starfish), and Taskstream, a new assessment tool. Director of Compliance, Bev Baligad, presented on Title IX.
The day heavily focused on professional development opportunities for both faculty and staff. A wide variety of breakout sessions featured topics such as Hawaiian Ways of Knowing: Participating in Protocol; The Why’s and How’s of General Education; Communication: The Most Human Resource; E Ala Pono Early Intervention Program; Assessment for Student Affairs and Staff; The Equity Game; Quality Matters: An Introduction to the Online Course Evaluation System; UH West Oʻahu’s Behavior Intervention Team (BIT); Assessment for Academic Affairs and Faculty; Students with Disabilities-Access and Accommodation; Implementing Real-time Virtual-reality Simulation across Disciplines; An Introduction to Institutional Data and Reports for Planning and Decision Making; Hawaiian Ways of Knowing: Applying in Our Work; UH West Oʻahu’s NEW Student Code of Conduct; Serving Veteran Students at UHWO; and Working Effectively with the Noʻeau Center; Proposing, Planning, and Conducting a Successful WI Course.
