Faculty FAQs:

Any UHWO registered student that is registered with the Disability Services Office. The student needs to be registered with our Disability Services Office to receive accommodations. We serve students that have invisible and/or visible disabilities.

Reasonable accommodations provide access to your course; however, accommodations should never alter the fundamental element of your course as every student is held to the same standard. Accommodations are there to create a level playing field for students with disabilities.

Faculty and staff should NEVER assume anyone lives with a disability; therefore, please refrain from asking the student regarding this matter. Utilize the most updated syllabus template, which should include information on student services available to our students, including the Disability Services Office.

Please encourage students to visit our website as it provides the step by step process to register with Disability Services: https://westoahu.hawaii.edu/disabilityservices/

If you have not received the quick guide link via email, please email uhwoada@hawaii.edu requesting for a copy.

Students have the right to self-disclose their disability to our office and apply for accommodations. Research shows that more than half may choose to NOT self-disclose. Tools like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is highly encouraged. An example of UDL is incorporating closed captioning on video content.

Accommodations become official from the date listed on the notice.

Changes to accommodations can occur at any time in a semester. Students can also apply for accommodations at any time during the semester.
