The University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu Compliance Hui encourages the campus community to stop by its “Domestic Violence and Dating Violence Awareness Event,” 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, at the Outdoor Learning Space.

The in-person event will feature free condom roses, prizes, and pamphlets filled with helpful information and resources.

“The UH West Oʻahu Compliance Hui wants to help our community in ending gender-based violence,” said Beverly Orillo, member of the Compliance Hui and Environmental Health and Safety Specialist at UH West Oʻahu. “Domestic and dating violence are problems that we hear about in our community. We encourage everyone to stop by our table.”

The event is part of One Billion Rising, which according to its website is considered the biggest mass action to end violence against women – cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence – in human history. Launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, the campaign began as a call to action based on the statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime, which adds up to more than one billion women and girls.

The awareness event will also include information about a competition involving the Break the Chain Dance, a One Billion Rising signature dance routine. Prizes will be awarded for the best performance of the Break the Chain Dance, performed in person or submitted online through Feb. 28. Contestants must submit a video of the entire dance and tag @uhwocompliance on social media or email it to pueohui@hawaii.edu. Prizes will be awarded based on the number of video submissions entered. Learn the dance here.
