Celebrate the fundamental framework of America’s system of government at a Constitution Day event featuring a presentation on the mechanics of voting, complimentary cupcakes, free U.S. Constitution books (pocket copies) and buttons, and more, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Nāulu Center and under the eaves of the Nāulu Center at the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu.

Presented on campus by the UH West O‘ahu Compliance Hui, Constitution Day is a federal day of observance that recognizes the date the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1787 at the Constitutional Convention. It also recognizes those who have become U.S. citizens.

At the event, students are welcome to attend “The Mechanics of Voting,” a presentation by the State of Hawai‘i Office of Elections from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in the Nāulu Center. (For students in related History or Political Science courses who will be offered extra credit by their faculty, a specialized attendance card will be provided at the end of the presentation proving attendance.)

During the event, the state Office of Elections will also assist in registering students to vote and answer any questions they may have. Event organizers said with this being an election year, it is important for everyone, including students, to have their voices be heard.

Additionally, Constitution Day attendees can test their knowledge about the U.S. Constitution and be entered to win a prize, enjoy snacks and swag (keychains, pens, and stickers), and receive information on various campus resources, such as Mental Health, Disability, Title IX, the James & Abigail Campbell Library, No‘eau Center, and UH West O‘ahu Veterans Center of Excellence.

Constitution Day requires educational institutions that received federal funds to provide educational programming to students regarding the U.S. Constitution each year on Sept. 17.
