As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu Compliance Hui presents Domestic Violence is Scary!, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Nāulu Center breezeway.

Addressing domestic and dating violence can be complex and intimidating, and it can affect not only the victim, but family, friends, co-workers, and colleagues as well, said Bev Baligad, Director of Compliance at UH West O‘ahu.

“This event attempts to build awareness of domestic and dating violence issues, how to identify when a person is a victim, suggestions for helping victims, and suggestions for identifying and maintaining healthy boundaries and relationships,” Baligad said.

Attendees can participate in the following activities at the event:

  • Take a Pledge of Non-Violence.
  • Take a quiz on domestic violence. Participants must achieve an 80% or higher to have their name entered into a drawing to win a prize.
  • Write notes of support to domestic violence survivors.
  • Help create a ribbon collage.
  • Take a selfie challenge. Currently enrolled UH West O’ahu students can take selfies wearing purple and post a selfie on social media with the hashtag #UHWODomesticViolenceAwareness2023, then fill out an informational survey. Participants will be entered for a chance to win a prize. (Each student is allowed only one submission.)

Event prizes include a UH West O‘ahu canvas tote bag, umbrella, hot and cold mug, and gift cards.

Domestic Violence is Scary! is being held in partnership with Trick O’ Reg, where students can get help with Spring 2024 registration, meet faculty, and pick their classes.
