ʻUpena offers hybrid professional development opportunities in emerging technology and new media for UH West Oʻahu faculty, staff, and partner institutions. On this page, you can find more information about past workshops and watch Zoom meeting recordings.

This iteration of the Hoʻoulu Workshop series was offered to UH West Oʻahu faculty and staff, as well as partner institutions, during the Fall 2025 semester. Each of the 4 workshops was presented as hybrid brown bag sessions, built around a five-step pedagogical redesign with generative AI use suggestions.
Hoʻoulu Workshop #1: Frameworks

This session briefly covered the workshop series and focused on the first step of the redesign process—introducing the TPACK (plus Indigenous Knowledge) and SAMR pedagogical frameworks.

Hoʻoulu Workshop #2: Creative Projects

This session focused on the second step of the redesign process—presenting different methods of engagement (creative media and technology-enhanced projects), providing simple examples, and posing redesign considerations in accessibility, technology, and creative process.

Hoʻoulu Workshop #3: Resources & Execution

This session focuses on the third and fourth steps of the redesign process—suggesting tools and resources for innovative assessment design, demonstrating media editing software, and providing new media project templates.

Hoʻoulu Workshop #4: Hōʻike

This session had participants present and reflect on their experience throughout the workshop series and focused on the fifth step of the redesign process—briefly reviewing the content of previous workshops and providing guidance on how to iterate on the redesign.

Organized by UH West Oʻahu Office of Professional Development & Academic Support (OPDAS), the Spring 2025 Professional Development Institute week was an opportunity for UH West Oʻahu faculty and staff to participate in sessions presented by and for UH West Oʻahu employees. ʻUpena contributed with five online synchronous workshops.

Speakers Billy Meinke (Assistant Specialist Faculty, Outreach College Instructional Design & Development, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa) and Alphie Garcia (Information Resources and Collection Management Librarian, University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu James & Abigail Campbell Library) review copyright fundamentals, explore ethical issues related to AI-generated media content, and provide practical use cases and tips for utilizing AI responsibly.
