Courses

Course timing: In addition to advising, it is important to use the Academic Map to help guide your academic progress and course completion. Science course sequences, such as Human Anatomy & Physiology, only begin in the Fall term.

Understanding when the courses are offered can help you plan your next steps if you are unable to meet the minimum grade requirements or are not accepted by UHM or another Nursing program on your first application attempt.

Re-taking courses to achieve a higher or a passing grade is encouraged for students that might not meet the academic requirements on the first attempt.  Note that UHM has specific course retake policies.  Use the academic map and discuss plans with both the academic advisor and the Faculty Director.

Completion of Prerequisite Credits

At the time of application to the UHM BS in Nursing program, students must have completed 2 PHYL lectures, 2 PHYL labs, an FG course, an DS course, and an FQ course to fulfill 16 or more prerequisite credits (includes AP, IB, CLEP, and Early College Credit). MICR 130, SP 151, BIOC 141, as well as the rest of the UHWO pre-nursing pathway curriculum, can be completed after application submission.  Applicants may apply to the BS nursing program while completing prerequisite courses. Applicants must have successfully completed all remaining prerequisites by January 1st of the year the student begins the nursing program.

The applicant is required to take prerequisites from an accredited college or university and must have earned a minimum course grade of “B” or higher (not B-) in PHYL lectures, PHYL labs, MICR 130, and the FS/FQ course. A minimum course grade of “C” or higher (not C-) is required for all other prerequisites. Admission will not be deferred.

Applicants may only repeat a maximum of 6 prerequisite credits. Only the most recent grade is used to calculate the prerequisite GPA. If the minimum grade is not received for required categories (FW, FS/FQ, FG, and DP), students may work with an Academic or Faculty advisor to find another course that satisfies the requirement instead of using your allotted retake credits.
