University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu veteran students can learn more about U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare benefits, work-study programs, confidential counseling services, and more at the Mobile Vet Center, which will be on campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Outdoor Learning Space.

“The Mobile Vet Center (MVC) is a VA asset that can provide counseling services, referrals, VA benefits, and connect veterans to community resources available,” said Rolly Alvarado, Veterans Outreach Program Specialist with the Department of Veterans Affairs. “It is a self-sustaining vehicle with a confidential office space, satellite for secure VA network, and the capability to provide WiFi access for visitors.”

The Mobile Vet Center visit to the UH West O‘ahu campus is sponsored by the UH West O‘ahu Veterans Center of Excellence.

“Now that we are welcoming more and more students back to campus, we are very happy to be able to bring the MVC back to campus to offer services to veteran students, veteran dependents, and veterans in our community,” said Dr. Richard Jones, interim director of the UH West O‘ahu Veterans Center of Excellence.

Leland Henobio and Paul Mendez, student assistants at the Veterans Center of Excellence, noted that navigating the VA benefits system can be difficult and the MVC can provide guidance from experienced representatives who can make the process easier for veterans and their family members.

Both Henobio and Mendez encourage veterans and their family members to not miss this opportunity to speak to an official representative face-to-face.

Jones added, “We are looking forward to making this a regular part of the UH West O‘ahu Veterans Center of Excellence monthly calendar and hope to have the MVC on campus regularly throughout the academic year.”
