Discover the art of playwriting at a free beginning playwriting workshop presented by the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu Humanities Division/English Concentration and Kumu Kahua Theatre, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, in C-225 on campus.
“It’s important for us to share the stories of our communities, and Kumu Kahua has championed local and Hawaiian theatre since the 1970s,” said faculty host Dr. Michael Pak, Assistant Professor of English at UH West O‘ahu. “There’s a richness in the people we all know from our lives, and it’s a pleasure, and even a responsibility, to write, document, and share these lives for our future generations.”
The playwriting workshop will be led by experts Harry Wong III, Kumu Kahua Artistic Director, and Daniel A. Kelin II, Honolulu Theatre for Youth Drama Education Director. Participants will learn playwriting techniques and exercises from Wong and Kelin.
“It will be a day of learning and, most importantly, fun,” Pak said.
The workshop is open to all UH West O‘ahu students, faculty, and staff, and to the general public; no previous playwright or theatre experience is necessary.
