Continued Enrollment Requirements

Once accepted into the program, students begin to take courses as outlined in the academic map. In addition to registering for the required pre-nursing pathway courses at UHWO, students must meet several requirements to maintain enrollment in the Pre-Nursing Pathway program:

  • Attendance at in person orientation and Pre-Nursing Pathway student meetings
  • Enrollment in the required Pre-Nursing pathway program courses at UHWO, many of which require in person attendance
  • Submission of monthly grade verifications
  • Completion of continued enrollment form each semester

Grade Requirements

The Pre-Nursing Pathway program has specific grade requirements for enrolled students. These requirements are in place so that students meet the application requirements for the UH Manoa BS in Nursing program. Students within the Pre-Nursing Pathway program at UH West Oʻahu are encouraged to meet the following grade requirements:

  • Maintain minimum grade of “B” or higher (not B-) in PHYL lectures, PHYL labs, MICR 130, BIOC 141, and MATH
  • Maintain minimum grade of “C” or higher (not C-) in all other prerequisite courses

Applicants may only repeat a maximum of 6 nursing prerequisite credits that are within the Pre-Nursing Program curriculum. Only the most recent grade is used to calculate the prerequisite GPA. If the minimum grade is not received for required categories (FW, FS/FQ, FG, and DP), after discussion with an Academic and/or Faculty Advisor, students may be able to choose another course that satisfies the requirement instead of using the allotted retake credits.

Students who do not meet this minimum grade requirements have the option to stay in the program and are encouraged to meet with an advisor to create a plan to facilitate academic progress.

What are my options if I do not get into Nursing School?

Because of the competitive nature of nursing school admissions, it’s possible that even a strong applicant may not be admitted on his or her first attempt. It’s a good idea to have a back-up plan in case this happens.

For most pre-nursing students, this means either continuing on in the pre-nursing pathway and applying to Nursing school again or completing a different bachelor’s degree at UHWO and then trying to go to nursing school or another advanced degree program.

Because pre-nursing students have taken prerequisites related to many healthcare profession degree programs, they can enter any bachelor’s degree in related areas of study. The pre-nursing program is designed to serve as a gateway to other health-related majors, including Health Sciences, other pre-Health Professions (pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician’s assistant, and pre-occupational therapy), BSNS in Life Sciences, BAS-Hawaiian and Indigenous Health and Healing,  BAS-Health Information Management (HIM), and BA in Public Administration

A bachelor’s degree can provide a broader educational background and more maturity before nursing or any other Health Professional school or advanced graduate degree, as well as an opportunity for students to raise their GPA and gain more work or volunteer experience.

*Acceptance into UHM’s program is not guaranteed for UH West Oʻahu Pre-Nursing students.
