Planning

The University of Hawai‘i–West Oʻahu physical plant will evolve as facilities are developed, renovated, expanded, and spaces created to support the university’s academic vision.  Our goal is to create an environment that is conducive to learning and working, safe and accessible, and sustainable and resilient.  Our Planning efforts anticipate the campus’s future needs, and provides the framework for its physical development, together with our other Planning and Facilities units, including the Design and Construction team.

Our work guides the long-range and short-term campus and land master planning, including urban design, infrastructure and transportation planning, and environmental and landscape design that support the built environment.

The University of Hawai‘i–West Oʻahu Long Range Development Plan (2006) guides the growth of the university and ensures the campus has a road map for the necessary infrastructure and transportation facilities, built environment, and environmental design for its higher education goals, as well as for the surrounding non-campus lands owned by the University of Hawaiʻi.  The current Long Range Development Plan is undergoing an update that is expected to be completed in Fall 2023.

The University of Hawai‘i–West Oʻahu Non-Campus Lands Urban Design Plan (2011) shapes the physical environment for the surrounding non-campus lands, focusing on the articulation of major open spaces, circulation network, streetscape design, and the interconnection between campus and non-campus lands.  The Urban Design Plan (UDP) promotes a synergy between non-campus development and the UH West Oʻahu and its academic mission, and encourages the development of a healthy, supportive, and vibrant campus community.  The UDP will be updated to align with City and State TOD objectives and to address conflicts between regulations and project review requirements.
