The University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu welcomes singer/songwriter Maria Ka‘iulani Kanehailua and producer/arranger Dean Harada for a special music event from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, in the Nāulu Center on campus.

Kanehailua and Harada will visit students from Humanities/Music Professor Jon Magnussen’s MUS 208: Intro to Songwriting class and share their experience of making the single “E Ku‘u Aloha” with K-Bay/Lō‘ihi Records, including how storytelling plays a role in their creative process.

The event is open to all UH West O‘ahu students, faculty, and staff, and the general public. “This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the process of becoming a songwriter or how to develop good collaborative relationships,” Magnussen said.

The single by Kanehailua, who simply goes by “Maria,” was released Feb. 22 and is the first release of K-Bay Records, an imprint of Lō‘ihi Records. The single, “E Ku‘u Aloha,” backed with “God I Love That Man,” brings together Stax-era soul and ‘90s R&B. The single is on all streaming platforms.

Please contact Dr. Jon Magnussen for more event information at jonmagnu@hawaii.edu or 808-689-2357.
