Celebrate Lā Kū‘oko‘a, Hawaiian Independence Day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu. There will be opportunities to participate in person at the Nāulu Center and online.
Schedule of activities:
- 10 to 11 a.m.: Running films from the ‘Ulu‘ulu Archives and screen printing
- 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.: Presentation on “Sociocultural Factors Impacting Native Hawaiian Health” by Dr. Keawe‘aimoku Kaholokula, Professor and Chair of Native Hawaiian Health in the John A. Burns School of Medicine at UH Mānoa (Zoom info: https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/83278267187. Meeting ID is 832 7826 7187 and passcode is uhwo)
- 12:30 to 2 p.m.: Pūpū, ‘awa, talanoa, and screen printing
The event is a collaboration between the Nāulu Learning Center, Institute for Research and Engaged Scholarship, Hawaiian-Pacific Studies, and the ‘Awa & Talanoa Research Collective at UH West O‘ahu.
Event organizers said it is important to create a space for UH West O‘ahu students and faculty to celebrate historical events that highlight the achievements of the Lāhui Hawai‘i, such as Lā Kū‘oko‘a.
