Building Hawaiian cultural competency is focus of new series

A new three-part professional development series on building Hawaiian cultural competency will be held throughout February online and is open to the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu campus community.

The Enhancing Hawaiian Cultural Competency series, featuring Kade Hemakanakauanoe‘oko‘olaulani Yam-Lum, is presented by the UH West Oʻahu Office of Distance Education and Learning (ODEL) and the Office of Professional Development and Academic Support (OPDAS).

The series will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays on Feb. 14, 21, and 28 via Zoom. The topics are:

  • Feb. 14: Cultural Awareness and Understanding. Register here by Monday, Feb. 12
  • Feb. 21: Incorporating Hawaiian Cultural Elements. Register here by Tuesday, Feb. 20
  • Feb. 28: Collaboration and Community Engagement. Register here by Monday, Feb. 26

Yam-Lum, the presenter, is a 2019 UH West O‘ahu graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian Pacific Studies. He is a Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian Arts and Crafts teacher at Kapolei Charter School.

The objectvies of the series, which is funded by the Keleka‘a Ho‘ona‘auao Grant, are the following:

  1. To enhance awareness and understanding of Hawaiian culture, traditions, and values.
  2. To provide educators with the knowledge needed to incorporate Hawaiian language and cultural elements into their curriculum.
  3. To cultivate a commitment among UH West O‘ahu faculty to support and promote Hawaiian cultural inclusion.

The series is open to UH West O‘ahu faculty and staff; students are also welcome. While the presenter’s primary audience is educators, students going into teaching may also find his sessions to be valuable. For more information or for questions, email uhwodl@hawaii.edu.
