The University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu Student Organic Garden presents several volunteer opportunities and events throughout the spring 2024 semester, and there’s something for everyone! The garden, or māla, is on campus adjacent to the Classroom (D) and Laboratory (E) buildings.

Weekly Harvest/Volunteer Days
10 a.m. to noon every Friday (when the campus is open)
The activity is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to participate in harvests and volunteer in the māla, and also a chance for students to get service learning hours. Participants should bring a reusable water bottle, use sun protection, and wear close-toed shoes. Students are welcome to harvest/volunteer on other days/times, but will need to coordinate that with garden supervisor Tasia Yamamura at tasiay@hawaii.edu.

Saturday Community Workdays
8 to 11 a.m. Feb. 3, March 2, and April 13
Join the māla crew for these hands-on workdays, where volunteer students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to help care for the Student Organic Garden/Hale Kūahuokalā. Participants should bring reusable water bottles, use sun protection, and wear close-toed shoes. Please contact tasiay@hawaii.edu to RSVP (required) or for any other inquiries.

ʻĀina-to-Kino Workshop: Lei Po‘o
12:30 to 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Nāulu Center
Learn to make a head lei for yourself or to gift to someone dear to you. Plant material will be harvested from around campus and foraged from elsewhere. Feel free to bring some of your own as well. Please contact tasiay@hawaii.edu to RSVP or for any other inquiries.

ʻĀina-to-ʻŌpū Workshop: Immunity Tonic
12:30 to 1:30 p.m. March 6 at the Nāulu Center kitchen
Fight off the flu with this simple, immune-boosting tonic featuring ginger and turmeric from the campus garden. Please contact tasiay@hawaii.edu to RSVP or for any other inquiries.

ʻĀina-to-ʻŌpū Workshop: Kimchi
Noon to 1:30 p.m. April 13 at the Student Organic Garden/Hale Kūahuokalā
If you love kimchi, then learn how to make this Korean classic. The workshop will be held after the garden’s community workday (8 to 11 a.m.). Participants are welcome and encouraged to attend both. Please contact tasiay@hawaii.edu to RSVP or for any other inquiries.
