The Spring 2023 Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, which has benefitted hundreds of University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu students throughout the years, returns to a two-day, hybrid format — from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, in C-225, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, via Zoom.
“We are in awe and at the same time humbled to share that we have been able to hold 12 symposiums on our campus to date (this will be the 13th symposium) — six fully in-person symposiums, four fully virtual symposiums, and two hybrid symposiums,” said Dr. Camonia Graham-Tutt, symposium director and associate professor of Community Health at UH West O‘ahu.
She continued, “From our experience, we have observed that participation in undergraduate research opportunities such as the Student Research and Creative Works Symposium can be one of the most powerful learning strategies for undergraduate students.”
The research and scholarship skills that UH West O‘ahu students learn from expert faculty research mentors bolster student innovation and have helped them re-engage in on-campus events that support their education and future career aspirations, Graham-Tutt said.
“This has been a real win for our students, to see each other in person and for some for the first time, to gather together since the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.
The symposium provides an atmosphere for students to demonstrate actively creating knowledge to address real questions in society.
Other faculty who will participate in the spring symposium have praised the benefits of the popular semesterly, campus-wide event, which aims to provide an opportunity for dynamic student research and creative scholarship learning experiences to be showcased on a variety of topics.
“The UH West O‘ahu Student Research and Creative Works Symposium allows students from anywhere in Hawai‘i the opportunity to engage and learn with various people from a variety of disciplines,” said Dr. Katherine Aumer, research mentor for Psychology and assistant professor of Psychology. “I am so grateful to have the opportunity to see so many talented students present their work.” (Course in the symposium: PSY212 Research Methods in Psychology.)
Dr. Rebecca Romine, research mentor for Health Professions and associate professor of Anatomy and Physiology, said, “The UH West O‘ahu Student Research and Creative Works Symposium has provided my students a great introduction into scientific communication and has reinforced the importance of communication in STEM and Health Science professions. This symposium has shown my students that they are capable of producing and presenting high quality work to a group of peers and mentors — opening the door for them to take the next step to a statewide or national symposium as they progress in their academic journey.” (Courses in the symposium: APSC Senior Project for Bachelor of Applied Science Health Professions concentration, PHYL 354 Exercise Physiology, PHYL 142L Human Anatomy and Physiology II Lab.)
