The Fall 2022 Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, which provides an opportunity for dynamic student research learning experiences to be showcased on a variety of topics, will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16, once again in a hybrid format. The in-person sessions will be 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in C-225 and the virtual sessions will be 1 to 5 p.m. via Zoom.

The University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu’s popular semesterly, campus-wide event aims to increase the number of undergraduate UH West O‘ahu students with engaged scholarship and research experience. The student-focused symposium also demonstrates diversity in the participants’ respective fields of study.

“Throughout the pandemic we saw a rise in the number of students participating in the Student Research and Creative Works Symposium,” said Dr. Camonia Graham-Tutt, symposium director and associate professor of Community Health at UH West O‘ahu. “While our students may have been at home attending classes and conducting research, they truly committed to showcasing their research and supporting one another as symposium participants.”

Students also shared their appreciation for the faculty and research mentors who took the time to guide their research as everyone navigated the unknown with COVID-19, Graham-Tutt said.

This is the 12th symposium since its inaugural event in 2016, and this will be the second semester it will be held in a hybrid format (the first was Spring 2022) “to support the needs of our in-person and distance education students,” Graham-Tutt said.

There were 37 in-person and 166 virtual participants, and 203 total attendees at last semester’s event. Prior to that, the four symposiums since Spring 2020 have been all-virtual events as a result of the pandemic.

“Not only did our virtual symposium increase the number of undergraduate students with research presentation experience, it also provided an opportunity for our Neighbor Island students to participate and engage with their peers in research,” Graham-Tutt noted.

The Fall 2022 Student Research and Creative Works Symposium program schedule is as follows:

  • 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on campus in C-225: In-person poster and oral presentations on the topical areas of Mathematics, Math Methods, Health Sciences Capstone Presentations, and Sustainability Pitch and Present Student Competition Participants
  • 1 to 5 p.m. via Zoom: Virtual poster and oral presentations on the topical areas of Marketing Research, Health Information Management, Math Methods, Anatomy and Physiology Lab, Biology, Information Security and Assurance Capstone Presentations, Circle Grant Project Participants

All UH West O‘ahu students, faculty, and staff, and the general public, are welcome to attend in-person and virtual sessions of the symposium.

“Attendees should know that by attending the symposium this semester, they are supporting the needs of a variety of student learners engaged in research,” Graham-Tutt said.
