Aspiring writers: You can still pursue your dream while working a 9-to-5 job. Learn how at a workshop presented by an award-winning author who did exactly that.

Scott Kikkawa, author of “Kona Winds” and most recently, “Red Dirt” — detective noir novels set in 1950s Hawaiʻi — will lead an in-person workshop, “So You Want to be a Writer,” 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu’s room C-225.

Dr. Jayson Chun, professor of history at UH West Oʻahu and the faculty host, said the workshop is great for people who work 9-to-5 jobs and want to write on the side.

“Mr. Kikkawa is a federal law enforcement officer who writes detective noir fiction set in postwar Honolulu,” Chun said. “In this workshop, he will give you tips on writing while working, and the process of getting published. He won the Elliot Cades Award for Literature for his novel ‘Kona Winds,’ which he wrote during his spare time.”

The writer’s workshop will be from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Kikkawa will then do a book reading from 5 to 6:20 p.m. from his latest novel “Red Dirt,” which is set in early 1950s Hawaiʻi; much of Kikkawa’s research was done at the Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR) archives at UH West Oʻahu.

The writer’s workshop is open to UH West Oʻahu students, faculty, and staff, and the general public. Registration is not required. Anyone who has questions about the workshop or would like more info may email jmchun@hawaii.edu.
