All University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu students are welcome to learn about Hawaiʻi’s economy from distinguished economists at online seminars to be held throughout the spring semester.

The presentations feature Dr. Eugene Tian, Chief State Economist from the Hawaiʻi State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), and Dr. Paul Brewbaker, economist and principal of TZ Economics.

“I would encourage our students to attend these Zoom talks to get valuable information on Hawaiʻi’s economy and know how to help revive our economy,” said Dr. Patricia Yu, Assistant Professor of Economics at UH West Oʻahu. “Our speakers will share their thoughts on many important economic topics such as Hawaiʻi’s current economic outlook, diversifying the economy, tourism, the role of Hawaiʻi’s government in our economy, the costs of living, and the housing market.”

Tian will discuss the role of government in our economy, especially during the pandemic, at a presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, to students of ECON 130: Principles of Microeconomics.

Brewbaker will give seminar talks on a variety of topics from 3 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays throughout this spring semester to students of ECON 311: Hawaiʻi’s Economy.

The dates and topics of Brewbaker’s talks will be the following:

  • Jan. 31: Hawaiʻi’s impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the economic outlook
  • Feb. 7: Covidiversification
  • Feb. 14: The price of paradise: prices and living costs
  • Feb. 28: Telework and urban spatial form
  • March 21: Tourism as small open economy transmission channel for exogenous shocks
