What can we learn from fruit flies? Find out at the next Math + Science + X Seminar, “Ouch! Lessons from Fruit Flies,” 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, via Zoom.

Dr. Michelle Juarez, a Science Education Fellow at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will talk about her fascinating research using fruit flies as a model system to examine the developmental intersections of repair and inflammation during injury.

She will also elaborate on how she is extending the genetic studies in fruit flies to explore a science communication project guided by student-generated analogies for methods and data.

Math + Science + X seminars, held 10 to 11 a.m. on Fridays, help Mathematics, Natural, and Health Sciences faculty at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu promote fascinating, interesting, and current topics that are happening in STEM. STEM community members around the island, mainland, and within the university are invited to give presentations. Each seminar is geared to introduce UH West Oʻahu undergraduates, faculty, staff, and interested community members to a variety of research and career development or opportunities.
