Revered kumu Aunty Lynette Paglinawan will once again offer her popular class — “Nohona Hawaiʻi: Living a Hawaiian Way” — 9:30 to 11 a.m. Mondays starting Aug. 30 through Dec. 6 via Zoom.

“Aunty Lynette Paglinawan is a rare and beloved teacher of ʻike kupuna, of our elder knowledge,” said Dr. Manulani Aluli Meyer. “This is a special class she offers every fall for students to understand more of the foundational principles of hoʻoponopono and of living a Hawaiian way.”

The non-credit class is free and open to the public.

“All students are welcome,” Meyer said. “She (Aunty Lynette) asks only that you commit to every Monday’s class.” (There will be no class on Labor Day, Sept. 6.)

Paglinawan has been mentored by noted Hawaiian scholar Mary Kawena Pukui on topics she will cover and explore during the “Nohona Hawaiʻi: Living a Hawaiian Way” class, which she began teaching five years ago.

Topics this year include:
  • Kanaka Worldview/Island Society Perspective
  • Nohona Hawaiʻi is based on aloha, or balanced harmony
  • Know Thyself
  • Interdependent reciprocal relationships
  • Kukulukumuhana – pooling of energy
  • Hoʻopono – speaking truth
  • Kaumaha – working with grief

Paglinawan was named a Living Treasure of Hawaiʻi in 2012 for her significant contributions to society and high level of accomplishment. She is also an educator, having been a member of the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work’s Hawaiian Learning Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
