University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu students will have the opportunity to present mentored research that displays both exploration and creativity on a variety of topics at the Fall 2020 Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, via Zoom.

The semesterly, campus-wide event’s goal is to increase the number of undergraduate UH West O’ahu students with engaged scholarship and research experience. The student-focused symposium will also demonstrate diversity in their respective fields of study.

“Students benefit educationally from participating in this event and we have also witnessed our students gain confidence in the area of giving oral research presentations,” said Dr. Camonia Graham-Tutt, Assistant Professor of Community Health at UH West Oʻahu.

The symposium is also a great experience for faculty, who will see their carefully designed curriculum and instruction efforts come to life as students present what they have been working on in class all semester, Graham-Tutt added.

“We are on the eighth symposium for our campus,” noted Graham-Tutt, who works with faculty each semester to organize the event. “We are thrilled to have been able to sustain this event, which has now moved to a virtual space.”

There were 100 virtual event attendees at the Spring 2020 symposium — the first virtual symposium — and currently there are more than 120 registered for the Fall 2020 event. All UH West Oʻahu students, faculty, and staff, and the general public, are welcome to attend.

“Attendees benefit by seeing the next generation of engaged scholars present work that supports scientific, business, management, information security and assurance, education, health, and creative media growth in our community,” Graham-Tutt said.

Those who are interested in attending the virtual symposium may register in advance. A confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting will be sent after registering.
