A fungal metabolite with anticancer activity will be the focus of an upcoming Math + Science + X Seminar, 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 13 via Zoom.
The seminar is titled, “Mimicking Mother Nature’s Creations in the Laboratory: The Total Synthesis of Terpestacin,” and features speaker Dr. Gideon Berger, an associate professor of Chemistry in the College of Natural and Computational Sciences at Hawaiʻi Pacific University. Berger will discuss his research at HPU with Terpestacin, a fungal metabolite with anticancer activity.
Berger’s talk will touch on the recurring theme in the natural world of nature creating amazing diversity and complexity from breathtakingly simple parameters and building blocks. He will discuss this idea and provide the laboratory total synthesis of fungal metabolite and antiangiogenesis agent, Terpestacin, as an example.
The event is hosted by the Mathematics, Natural, and Health Sciences Division at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu. Math + Science + X seminars help to promote fascinating and current STEM topics. Seminars are geared to introduce UH West Oʻahu students to a variety of research and career opportunities.
