The Associated Students of the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu announced the results of its recent Fall 2020 Special Elections, revealing a diverse representation of students involved in student government.

“These newly elected include representation from neighbor islands, nontraditional students, those who are parents, and women,” said ASUHWO Advisor Rouel Velasco.

Election results were ratified Oct. 12 during the ASUHWO Senate General Meeting. Learn more about each of the following new student leaders on the ASUHWO website:

As the newly elected president, Jenna Marie Marcos said her main focuses are financial literacy and social injustices.

“Therefore, most of my initiatives I have been doing is towards offering more financial literacy classes and resources,” said Marcos, who was previously vice president. (The vice president position is vacant, so the senate will appoint someone to serve as vice president.)

Marcos noted that ASUHWO welcomes students to attend a financial literacy workshop — 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 via Zoom — presented by Business Administration Professor Katie Landgraf, who teaches accounting and is the Accounting Club advisor. Event participants will take a look at scholarships and taxes, as well as learn how to budget their money. Fill out the Financial Literacy RSVP Form to attend. (Meeting ID is 979 1552 1713, passcode is 427906.)

“In addition, I have been working with two other senators, Caton Liang and Brient Hutchinson, to create a resolution in regards to the social injustice and racial inequalities within our nation,” Marcos said. “Other topics I want to accomplish as the new ASUHWO president is mental health and ensuring that students are getting a quality experience during this time of COVID-19.”
