“Just because you’re poor, doesn’t mean you deserve poor healthcare, in poor clinic facilities, from poorly trained doctors. In addition, just because you are poor, doesn’t mean you deserve a poor education, on poor campus facilities, by poorly trained professors.”
Dr. Custodio has dedicated his career to providing health care to the poor and underserved in Hawai‘i. For 40 years, he has practiced pediatrics in Kalihi-Palama, Hilo, Puna, Kau, Waianae, Nanakuli, Kapolei and Waipahu. Presently he sees pediatric patients in a clinic in Chinatown. He has also served as a medical director at community health centers in Kalihi-Palama, the Big Island of Hawaii and Waianae.
Through these experiences, he has learned that healthcare is more than just building clinics and giving out pills, it is also about giving people the opportunity to access a good education that will lead to gainful employment paying a sustainable, living wage. With this vision in mind, he helped found an innovative community-based medical school, a nurse practitioner residency program, a medical assistant internship program and a longitudinal student mentoring program. After discovering the size, scope and availability of careers in health science, he came out of retirement to build an Undergraduate Health Science Program at the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu. He believes this contribution will be one solution to the healthcare workforce shortage.
Dr. Custodio became a “Reede Scholar” after completing the Commonwealth/Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard University. He was in the second class of fellows, the first Asian/Pacific Islander and, to date, the only Filipino scholar.
