Waste

Different types of waste are generated on the UH West Oʻahu campus. It is the UH West Oʻahu Mission to ensure any waste on the UH West Oʻahu campus is disposed of appropriately to help protect the environment. This guide was developed to help assist faculty and staff on how to dispose of certain items on campus. The University of Hawaii is subject to strict federal, state and local regulations regarding the disposal of waste from the campus. If waste is not disposed of properly, UH West Oʻahu may be faced with potential penalties, fines or rejections of entire loads. It is essential that all waste is properly segregated and appropriately disposed of.

Guidelines

UH West Oʻahu is committed in keeping pollutants out of our environment. The UHWO Waste Guidelines assists waste generators to properly collect and/or dispose of the different waste generators on campus. The guidelines do not apply to personal or household waste as the University must comply with many local, state and federal regulations. Personal property shall not be disposed of with university waste.

Autoclave

Biological waste must be decontaminated or sterilized before they are properly disposed of from the UHWO campus. An autoclave, or steam sterilizer, is specialized pressure chamber which uses steam and pressure to kill biological agents.  To use any autoclave, users must be fully trained in autoclave safety and operations.
